Totally Out of Left Field, But...
I know this seems completely random, but we discussed seeing and hearing things in nature in class yesterday, and I recalled an instance in Poe's "The Bells" which reminded me of this. In it, he repeats the word bells seven times in quick succession, which (to me at least) is reminiscent of the movement and sound of bells; that is, their chiming.

Hi Megan, I have found that it is much easier to evoke a visual experience than an audio through poetry. I think it is one thing to write ABOUT sounds and another to write in such a way as to conjure up the sounds. I found some beautiful hearing moments in Poe's "A Winter and spring Scene," and I agree w/ you about the bells. I think we really lose something when we do not read poetry aloud, esp with others. Perhaps this has to do w/ being a vision centric people...I missed class Mon so if this is all redundant forgive me! blythe
